Leigh Cooney
LEIGH AND ROLO COONEY FEBRUARY 14th to MARCH 9th 2013.
LEIGH AND ROLO COONEY CLOSING RECEPTION SATURDAY MARCH 9TH.

Leigh and Rolo are internationally collected Irish born Canadian artists. Due to the self-taught nature of their paintings, have often been closely associated with marginal artists known as “Outsiders.” Shunning both the “Outsider” and “Fine-Arts” labels, the Cooney Brothers consider themselves Neo-Folk artists.

Neither Leigh nor Rolo have formal arts training, preferring to evolve and experiment with canvas. Despite being self-taught, Leigh is an accomplished full time artist with pieces in galleries and private collections all over the world from South Africa to most American States and of course, Canada. Rolo is also self-taught, and has only recently decided to take up painting as a way of coping with Ochlophobia (the fear of groups of people) that often prevents him from leaving his home.

Works by both brothers are figurative and psychological in nature. For Leigh, painting was originally a therapeutic way of coping with his Attention Deficit Disorder and high anxiety. As a chronically shy Irish child immigrant, many of his paintings focus on feelings of childhood alienation, as well as the daily struggles involved in living with A.D.D. Both Leigh and Rolo draw heavily on pop culture for inspiration.
